The poet W.B. Yeats, once said “Education is not the filing of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

On Thursday, August 18th, members of the Loan Science team took 24 new backpacks full of school supplies to Walnut Creek Early College Prep Elementary school. The team collected these items for Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade students who might otherwise not have been able to start school without the necessary school supplies. Not only were these students now able to fill the “pail” at their desks, but also light their fires for learning by starting the school year off right.

The Loan Science team felt that this was an excellent way support our local educational community. Nelson Braendle, Operations Manager, said “We feel a great sense of purpose in the education industry. Walnut Creek Elementary is part of our local community, plus they have an Early College program, so we were more than happy to provide some support for their students. Hopefully this will enable them to place their focus more on what they want from their education, and less on what they need for it.”

The school is right up the street from the Loan Science office and is a Title 1 school. That means that 90% of the students are impoverished and qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. Susie Anderson, Loan Science’s Marketing Manager, also noted, “When a family is struggling to make ends meet, not having to buy school supplies lets them focus on the things that really matter for their family, like paying rent and putting food on the table.”

According to Braendle, “Once we put up the signs for employees to donate to this school, the project became an overnight success with tons of supplies rolling in after just one day.” Loan Science plans to make this a yearly tradition to help as many students and families as possible!
